Common air suspension problems can be a pain, but Mercedes have crafted a beautifully impressive air suspension system in their self-adjusting Airmatic shocks. The Airmatic suspension system was initially designed to combat the issues that drivers were facing with the suspension being too rigid or not providing enough resistance during bumpy driving. However, despite its incredible design, the Airmatic is not immune from failure. With natural wear-and-tear of a vehicle; parts fail, malfunction, getting damaged, dirty and generally not performing as well as when they were driven directly out of the car dealership.
The Airmatic suspension was first launched by Mercedes inso it has been installed in some Mercedes vehicles for over 16 years. This far surpasses any generous warranty period, so even durable original Airmatics may need to be replaced over time.
This article will cover some of the common Mercedes Airmatic problems that occur and how to identify them. A lot of Mercedes-Benz cars have an air suspension control unit N51which is responsible for the adjustments between sport and comfort modes of driving. However, sometimes there are problems with this system or there is a fault with the air suspension itself.

The relay is a switch that controls electronic circuits by opening and closing circuits within your compressor. Sometimes it fails as a result of over-extended periods of engagement with the compressor. Your mechanic will help you to identify where the Airmatic relay location is if you are want to change it. This is a straightforward fix that your garage can change quite easily. The compressor is responsible for pumping the air suspension bags with air and can sometimes get airflow blockages; lose desired pressure required to maintain air suspension, or the compressor may fail altogether.
Sometimes it may appear that the compressor should be replaced, but sometimes it may require a simple fix such as a cable repair or replacement. If the compressor is the issue, it is one of the most expensive repairs in the air suspension system. The main sign that the compressor is at fault is the whole vehicle is lowered and does not initiate any raise whatsoever.
Air can potentially leak back into the compressor and cause internal damage to the compressor itself. This will impede the quality of journey and also the suspension elevation of the vehicle.
W Airmatic valve block problems have a tendency to occur, but drivers often misidentify this issue as air suspension damage. One of the side-effects of Airmatic valve block is that the vehicle does not maintain its height. Sometimes Airmatic shocks have factory failings or they become damaged due to incorrect handling during any stage of the life-cycle of the shock. Customers report a squeaking noise or a rattling coming from inside the shock itself.
This is usually caused as a result of dislodged internal components of the Airmatic suspension. The part may function fine, but the squeaking noise makes the driving experience unbearable, so the Airmatic parts should be replaced. Sometimes the culprit is the actual Airmatic air suspension strut itself that is the problem.
It may fail as soon as it is installed as a result of incorrect installation or it may be as a result of a faulty factory part. Over time, your Mercedes Benz will loose some of its key handling characteristics. At German Auto Center, one of the most common suspension issues that we see is worn or failed control arm or thrust arm bushings thrust arms are the forward facing control arm.
The control arm bushings on your Mercedes Benz take most of the force during braking, cornering and heavy acceleration. These forces can be extreme and cause the rubber bushings to fatigue and crack causing a front-end vibration or shimmy.
Other components such as wheel bearings, ball joints and sway bar links should be inspected at the same time. Although failure of these components are less frequent, control arm bushings left unchecked will put additional stress on other suspension components such as ball joints, tie rods and sway bar links leading to excessive and premature tire wear.
German Auto Center will inspect your suspension components at no charge to ensure your Mercedes Benz is performing as it is designed and is safe on the road. If you are feeling a vibration or shimmy from your Mercedes Benz front-end, there are a few simple inspections that you can do.
Control Arm Thrust Arm Bushings — If you are feeling a vibration or shimmy, visually inspect the control arm bushings at the inboard end of the control arm where it mounts to the chassis for cracks, leaks or missing pieces of rubber. Additionally inspect the forward facing thrust arm for similar signs of wear. Ball Joints — Using an appropriate sized pry bar pry between the control arm and the spindle to determine if there is any play in the ball joint or where the ball joint is pressed into the control arm.
There should be no movement vertically or laterally. Sway Bar Links — Visually inspect the links connecting the sway bar to the control arms. These may be rubber or may have a ball joint style connection.
If your Mercedes Benz has rubber bushings, look for cracking or failure of the bushings. If your Mercedes Benz has ball joint style links, look for any play or movement in the joint. Tie Rods — Tie rods are the components that connect the steering rack to the hub or spindle on your Mercedes Benz. These components can be visually inspected for excessive movement or play by grasping a tire and rocking it fore and aft. While some is rocking the tire, visually watch the inner and outer tie rod ends for any movement or play.
These are just a few simple tips and inspections that you can do to visually inspect your Mercedes Benz critical suspension components.

2008 Mercedes-Benz S550
Car has been to 4 Benz shops 8 times since April '09 and been out of service 45 days since April ' First attempt changed swaybar mounts. This did not work and did not make sense to me. Second attempt to fix suspension issue could not reproduce condition, third attempt required having a technician in the car for a ride along to finally convince MB there was a problem, the TSB was referenced to address and resolve the issue.
Suspension problem apparent after vehicle purchase. Original repairing dealer refused to correct - took to another dealer and paid out of pocket. Cam plug was still leaking so took it back to dealer to get warranty repair. Vehicle was creaking and speaking on bumps. Replaced all air struts with Arnott.
